Hermes Honing rings/wheels

Process description

Gear honing is a continuous precision machining process in which the honing tool and the workpiece roll off one another. In the machining zone, a sliding movement  running diagonally from the tip to the root of the tooth results from the angle of intersection between the axis of the workpiece and the axis of the tool. The surface structure this generates on the flank is typical of this microcutting process. Gear honing as the final machining step in making gears is now an established machining step with all renowned gear and automotive manufacturers.

Machining objective

The primary objective of gear honing is to reduce noise in the transmission by changing the surface structure of tooth flanks.

Hermes honing rings set standards

All renowned gear and automotive manufacturers throughout the world have been using Hermes honing rings successfully for over 20 years.

In addition to expertise, we also have the technical equipment to enable us to design the gear-cutting geometry of honing rings to suit specified workpiece data or specific customer requirements.

We are able to produce all the common honing ring dimensions for all types of machine - such as those made by Gleason, Fässler, Präwema, Reishauer and Kapp. The honing ring materials used can be customized to suit specific requirements.

Vitrified-bonded Honing rings

The latest direct-drive machines allow vitrified-bonded honing rings to be used. Intensive collaboration with machine manufacturers and research institutions has allowed Hermes Cerfine Honing rings to be developed.

These tools made of vitrified-bonded grain simultaneously have a high degree of hardness and a modulus of elasticity approx. 3x greater than that of resin-bonded honing rings. They can only be used on machines with a direct-drive honing head, as the low machine dynamics virtually rule out the risk of tooth fractures.

Increased cutting speeds and feed forces mean that the honing ring works within the self-sharpening range of the grain in a similar way to a grinding wheel, exploiting its performance to the full; this leads to very long dressing intervals with consistent quality.

Resin-bonded Honing rings

We have continuously developed the resin-bonded, internal-gear honing rings for so-called "Faessler honing". For the first time, the vitrified-bonded conglomerates in Hermes Profine Honing rings enabled gears to be honed immediately after hardening.

Another innovation is combining these vitrified-bonded conglomerates and patented hollow spheres with a coating made of vitrified-bonded grain in a matrix made of resin-bonded grain. This arrangement increases the number of cutting edges engaged at any one time whilst simultaneously increasing porosity. The homogeneous distribution of HERMESIT® hollow spheres of grain allows much better transport of chips away from the area of action, leading to a significant reduction in honing forces. The basic matrix of epoxy resin means that the modulus of elasticity changes only slightly and the honing ring remains elastic enough to compensate for machine vibrations.
